Staff Attorney 1

DESCRIPTION Penn State Law is seeking applications for a staff attorney in the Civil Rights Appellate Clinic and the Center for Immigrant's Rights Clinic. This position will represent clients on high-profile, cutting-edge cases and policy development, and will work under the supervision of Clinic Directors on a variety of projects. These clinics act as "in-house" office that function as a small pro bono law firm representing clients in a variety of complex civil litigation and policy matters. This position will assist clinic directors in counseling clients, witnesses and governmental leaders and will also review and edit student generated materials. The staff attorney will help to oversee the work of more than a dozen students who support these clinics as part of their law degree programs and interact with external clients from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. The candidate for this position must be creative, curious and self-motivated with an ability to anticipate issues and follow-up independently. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret legal sources including regulations, statutes, case law, administrative decisions and legislative history, law periodicals, professional journals, etc. Position requires excellent judgment, including sensitivity to client needs, cultural nuances and will work with confidential information. Must be able to work as part of a team as well as independently. Flexible work attitude, and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with a small staff and frequent student turnover (due to semester long courses and graduation). We seek a candidate who can successfully interact with a variety of people of various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Fluency in Spanish preferred but not required. Vacations will be scheduled around the requirement of maintaining effective case coverage. Some evening and occasional weekend hours will be expected. Typically requires a J.D. or L.L.B. from an ABA-accredited law school or higher , or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with possibility of re-funding. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
